CBD Oil: What It Is, What It Does and Where You Can Find It.

CBD oil took the United States and Europe by storm in 2018 with millions of people seeking out the oil for its many evidence-based benefits. As a matter of fact, search engines have reported that CBD has been the topic of about 6.4 million online searches per month. Now, if one compares this to the fact that there was practically no one googling CBD about two to three years ago, one just has to wonder: what’s all the hype about?

CBD is a shorter – and a definitely easier to pronounce – name for cannabidiol, one of the natural botanical components of cannabis plants. CBD oil is prepared by extracting cannabidiol from the cannabis plant and adding it to carrier oils e.g. hempseed, sunflower, olive or coconut oil.

At this point, we’d like to let you know that this post is about to get a tad more ‘educatinlgy’ detailed, but, we promise to keep it fun and interesting. If you’d rather pass on this one, you can skip to other parts of the post by clicking on any of the following subheadings:

What is CBD Oil and What Does it Do?

CBD is an acronym for cannabidiol which makes up 40% of cannabis and has a chemical structure that resembles its ‘high-inducing’ cousin, tetrahydrocannabinol, TCH, which is also found in the same plant. Unlike TCH, CBD has no physcoactive properties or effects, .i.e. it cannot make a person ‘high’, and just as their names are different, so are their effects on our bodies. While TCH directly binds with receptors in the ECS (more on this in the next paragraph) to produce the ‘high’ cannabis is notorious for, CBD works by directing our bodies to make more efficient use of its own cannabinoids – yes, you read right, our bodies produce their own cannabinoids and they’re called endocannabinoids.

The endocannabinoids are part of the human body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS) which is responsible for receiving and translating signals from cannabinoids and producing cannabinoids (anandamide and 2-arachidonoylglyerol), receptors (CB1 and CB2) and certain enzymes. The ECS is responsible for the regulation of certain bodily functions such as sleep, mood, appetite, immunity, pain etc. CBD interacts with the ECS and its various components to reduce pain and inflammation, treat depression, alleviate cancer symptoms, inhibit cancer cells, improve sleep quality and promote heart health, among many other things.

In order to really appreciate CBD Oil why don’t we take a deeper look at some of its many benefits?

Here we go:

CBD for relief from pain and inflammation

CBD interacts with the ECS, the nervous system and a number of different protein molecules in the body to reduce pain and inflammation. Marijuana, a source of CBD, has actually been used as treatment as early as 2900BC and modern science is proving that folks from way back weren’t high when they regarded it as a healing herb. CBD has been studied for its pain and inflammation relieving properties and one of the studies, published in the European Journal of Pain, reported a significant reduction in inflammation and signs of pain when CBD was topically applied on arthritic rats. Another study, carried out in 2014 and published in the British Journal of Pharmacology, concluded that CBD is a “useful pharmacological alternative in the treatment of the disease-associated chronic pain.” This means that where prescription and OTC drugs fail to relieve pain, CBD can be used as a more natural, evidence-backed alternative.

CBD for Rheumatoid Arthritis

According to a study published in the journal of pain in 2017, treatment with CBD showed a prevention of the development of nerve damage and joint pain in rats induced with osteoarthritis. Rheumatoid arthritis is an auto-immune disease that causes the immune system to attack and damage joint tissues. Researchers think that CBD prevents this by binding with the receptors of the ECS and/or stimulating the ECS to produce endocannabinoids that bind with the receptors. CBD also prevents the absorption of anandamide (remember this one? It’s one our natural cannabinoids), a pain regulator and promoter of happy feelings, which results in its higher levels in the bloodstream, reducing pain as it courses through our bodies.

CBD for Epilepsy:

Contains nearly 100% CBD

In 2018, the United States’ FDA approved CBD (trade name: Epidiolex) for the treatment of epileptic seizures caused by 2 forms of the condition (Lennox-Gastaut syndrome and Dravet syndrome) that affect children. Seizures from these conditions have proven difficult to handle with other medications but thanks to research and a number of clinical and laboratory studies, we now know that they (seizures) can be treated with CBD.

CBD for Diabetes:

According to a 2016 report in the Clinical Hemorheology and Microcirculation, CBD may reduce the inflammation of the pancreas. This is good news for sufferers of type 1 diabete mellitus as pancreatic inflammation from auto-immune attacks on the cells of the pancreas is what results in the condition. Results from recent studies also show that it has potential for use in the protection against or the delay of the development of type 1 diabetes. It can also be used to manage the pain that occur in both type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

CBD has shown a lot of promise in the treatment and management of other conditions that include multiple sclerosis, insomnia, acne, cancer, anxiety and mental disorders, substance abuse withdrawal symptoms and more. The US beauty industry has started marketing products with CBD and boy, have they been selling! Lots of stylists, beauty and fashion experts have also shared their positive reviews of the product for relieving pain from activities as mundane as walking in heels to pains and aches from athletic and sports activities. It has even been recommended for use in muscle recovery as it’s a more powerful, more natural and less toxic alternative to painkillers  – so to all of you workout-loving, gym-going, muscle-building and fitness-aware individuals, you can’t go wrong by adding some CBD oil to your kit.

How To Use CBD Oil

Now, that we’ve seen some of what CBD does for the human body, let’s look at the different ways CBD oil can be used to reap of these benefits. CBD can be taken orally as supplements, inhaled or applied on the skin as a topical treatment. A 2016 study of the effect of CBD on arthritis in rats showed that topical application of CBD could be more effective than oral in the treatment and management of the inflammation and pain. When taken orally, CBD bioavailability (bioavailability is used to refer to the rate and degree at which the body’s circulatory system absorbs a substance) is about 6-15%; when inhaled, it can reach 40-50% and when used topically, it’s around 45%.

CBD oil can be ingested; it’ll pass into the liver where it’ll be metabolized to deliver the active ingredient into the bloodstream. Another mode of oral ingestion is sublingual where drops of the oil are placed under the tongue and absorbed by the mouth’s mucus membranes when it’s held there for about 60-90 seconds. It can also be mixed into food and drinks for a more enjoyable experience.

CBD oil can be applied directly to the skin. This has shown to be the fastest route to achieving pain relief with the weed extract. Thanks to the carrier oils, CBD oils also contain fatty acids, proteins and vitamins which nourish and vitalize the skin – and that’s in addition to its acne-banishing, eczema-clearing and anti-inflammatory activities.

The fastest way to get CBD into the bloodstream so far is by inhalation. Vaping – inhaling and exhaling aerosol – is a popular way of doing this. A vaporizer a.k.a vape is an electronic battery-powered device that simulates the action of smoking; you’ll need one to properly enjoy the benefits of inhaling CBD oil. However, it’s important to note that vaping may lead to other health problems especially if the vape cartridge is made with thinning agents.

Types of CBD Oil

CBD is gotten from the cannabis plants which are often referred to as hemp or marijuana. People often wonder what the difference is between the two. Well, the difference lies in how much THC they contain. Hemp has a lower THC level or concentration than marijuana – remember that THC is the addictive substance in cannabis plants that produces the feeling of ‘being high’. Hemp and marijuana both contain CBD and THC but over the years, marijuana had been selectively bred by farmers to increase the plant’s THC level – makes sense, if you’re a farmer looking to make some illegal cash from the budding industry. According to the 2018 US Farm Bill, only hemp plants with less than 0.3% THC levels are to be considered legal and thus safe.

CBD oil can be derived from marijuana and hemp plants. CBD oils derived from marijuana generally contain more THC than those derived from hemp. Depending on their makers, CBD oils contain varying concentrations of these compounds – there’re also makers whose oils contain only CBD isolates. You can also find flavored CBD oils; popular flavors include peppermint, orange, lemon etc.

Thanks to marketing and product promotion, it’s easy for one to confuse hemp oil with CBD oil. While the former comes from the seeds of the Cannabis sativa plant, the latter is made from leaves, flowers and stalks of the plant; they contain higher levels of CBD. The seeds do not contain the same quantities or levels of compounds as other parts of the plant but they do transfer their rich reserves of fatty acids, nutrients and useful bioactive compounds to hemp oil as well. Here’s our advice on this issue: to get all the benefits of cannabidiol, look for products clearly labeled CBD oil or full-spectrum hemp oil (oil made from seeds, leaves, flowers and stalks of the hemp plant).

How to buy CBD Oil:

In an interview published on mdanderson.org, Cynthia Demarco asked Kimberson Tanco, M.D., what the dangers of using CBD oil were; quality and cleanliness were some of what he mentioned as being important information buyers should note. Other things to look out for when you’re shopping for CBD oils include:

  • Purity i.e. levels of THC; if it isn’t made with CBD isolates alone, it should contain only trace amounts of THC
  • Expiration dates or information on shelf life
  • Instructions for use and dosing guidance

Before we introduce you to stores where authentic CBD oil is sold, here’s a piece of advice for our people who’d like to make huge profits from buying and selling CBD oil: plan to get approval or registration from the relevant bodies (NAFDAC for Nigeria, FDA for USA, Health Canada for Canada etc.) for your CBD oil. This way, you’ll be able to import CBD oil in commercial quantities and promote your product without fear of reprimand or restrictions – and you’ll also get to amass huge chunks of market shares for yourself. However, if you aren’t looking to conquer the CBD oil market space in your location, then you can go ahead and order small quantities as those are usually treated as personal use items.

Yes, it can be advertised on your wall and social media timelines. However, one has to bear in mind the fact that the CBD oil, like all health products and supplements, is a product that falls into a category of products that is regulated by NAFDAC. Like we said in our post, if you want to be able to audaciously market and promote your CBD oil, you should consider getting it registered. This way, you can even pay for Facebook ad campaigns, a surefire way to promote products on that platform.

  2. I am supper excited by this quality research and presentation. This Hemp CBD oil is sold for 000s of Naira as MLM. I was even thinking it was exclusive brand till you opened my eyes. I am ready to dive in by importing samples first as personnel effect and if it worked as it has been claimed. Why not, NAFDAC can be approached for registration for massive importation.
I don’t mind collaboration for any interested party.
Meanwhile, confirm if I can import Ibcccndc and Mabox, 6 bottles each so that i can place order
